The study on planned home versus planned hospital births1 (published Sept. 15) has many strengths, but it has one glaring weakness. It fails to provide the nature and circumstances of the deaths in each group. It is widely recognized that stillbirths prior to 28 weeks are not a reflection of obstetric care. Unless and until the authors are forthcoming about the circumstances of the deaths, we need to reserve judgment about what the study really shows.
A number of studies have investigated the outcomes of home birth.3–8 Although these studies did not find statistically significant differences in adverse perinatal outcomes, they had a variety of methodological limitations, such as selection bias, lack of comparison groups, lack of statistical power and lack of certainty about submission of data.
Jinými slovy - z té studie vyplývá, že obecně je na Západě nízká úmrtnost novorozenců, bez ohledu na to, kde se porod uskuteční. Studie nepostihuje - ani nemůže - výhody či nevýhody porodu doma v případě komplikací...
